In an interview published on the eve of Apple’s “iPhone 12” launch event, Apple VP of platform architecture Tim Millet has explained some of the work that went into the A14 Bionic system-on-chip, and what it means for the future of Apple’s chip designs.

New self-erasing chip could be used to detect counterfeit or tampered products

A team of academics from the University of Michigan has developed self-powered and self-erasing chips that they hope could be used as an anti-counterfeit or tamper-detection system.

The new chips have been built with the help of a new material that changes its color while it temporarily stores energy.

The material consists of a three-atom-thick layer of semiconductor laid on top of a film of azobenzene molecules.

The semiconductor is known as “beyond graphene,” and has a special property that it can emit light when its molecules vibrate at certain frequencies.

When the two are combined, the azobenzene molecules pull on the “beyond graphene” semiconductor, causing it to vibrate in its special frequency range and emit light.

This reaction effectively allows academics to “write” visible messages on the chip itself.

Samsung Electronics profit likely at two-year high after Huawei chip orders, phone recovery

Apple’s T2 Chip Has Unpatchable Security Flaw, Claims Researcher

Intel Macs that use Apple’s T2 Security Chip are vulnerable to an exploit that could allow a hacker to circumvent disk encryption, firmware passwords and the whole T2 security verification chain, according to a cybersecurity researcher.


Apple’s custom-silicon T2 co-processor is present in newer Macs and handles encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities, as well as several other controller features. In a blog post, however, security researcher Niels Hofmans claims that because the chip is based on an A10 processor it’s vulnerable to the same checkm8 exploit that is used to jailbreak iOS devices.

Nvidia lays out plan to create new kind of data center chip

(Reuters) – Nvidia Corp <NVDA.O> on Monday laid out a multi-year plan to create a new kind of chip for data centers, aimed at siphoning off more functions from its chief rival Intel Corp <INTC.O>.

Models with limited features will debut in months, while full-fledged versions are planned within two years, Nvidia said in a press briefing. Server companies such as Dell Technologies <DELL.N> and Lenovo Group Ltd <0992.HK> plan to integrate them into their machines, it added.

Nvidia chips have long been used to improve video game graphics, but in recent years they have helped to speed up artificial intelligence tasks such as image recognition. The chips typically sit alongside an Intel central processor, offloading some of the computing work.

Macs Need T2 Security Chip to Play 4K HDR Netflix in macOS Big Sur

Apple’s upcoming macOS Big Sur operating system introduces HDR video support and allows Netflix users to watch content in 4K HDR for the first time. However, it turns out that only Macs with an Apple T2 Security chip are compatible with Ultra HD streaming.


Apple Terminal spotted a recently updated support document on Netflix’s Help Center that now includes hardware requirements for viewing 4K HDR content in Safari on macOS Big Sur.

According to the web page, viewing Ultra HD content can only be achieved on a “select 2018 or later Mac computer with an Apple T2 Security chip.” In addition to that, every monitor connected to the computer on which Ultra HD is streamed must be a 60Hz 4K capable display with a HDCP 2.2 connection.
