Apple’s Intercom Feature Works on iPhone, iPad, HomePod, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay

During the unveiling of HomePod mini at Tuesday’s Apple event, Apple introduced an upcoming new feature called Intercom that works across all Apple devices with the exception, it would seem, of Mac.

Intercom will enable family members to communicate with each other wherever they are in the home, with the ability to send and receive spoken messages via HomePod speakers. If a family member is in the garden or away from home, they can still use Intercom on their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and even CarPlay. Apple explains:

A new Intercom feature offers a quick and easy way for family members to connect with each other at home. One person can send an Intercom message from one ‌HomePod‌ to another — whether in a different room, a specific zone, or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated ‌HomePod‌ speaker. Intercom works with

Apple may reveal iPad Air shipment date during ‘iPhone 12’ event

Apple may use Tuesday’s “Hi, Speed” event to tell potential buyers of the new iPad Air when they can purchase the tablet, weeks after the company launched the model during its “Time Flies” event.

During the first “Time Flies” special event on September 15, Apple introduced a redesigned iPad Air, but aside from telling customers it would be available sometime in October, an exact date wasn’t offered during the presentation. With the second Apple event looming, it is suggested Apple may advise of when the tablet will actually go on sale.

According to serial leaker Jon Prosser on Twitter, Apple “will give you the launch date of iPad Air during the October 13th event.” Given the lack of date from Apple itself for its release, it seems plausible a public event will include an update on shipment dates.

Save $50 on Latest iPad Pro 11.0 With This Rare Early Prime Day Deal

Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends

If you are looking to take advantage of Prime Day deals to purchase a premium tablet, then you’re in luck. It’s rare to see discounts for newly released Apple products, but they do happen every once in a while. A perfect example is this early Prime Day deal for the Wi-Fi model of the 11-inch, 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad Pro. The offer, which joins the list of Prime Day iPad deals ahead of the October 13-14 event, cuts $50 off the tablet’s price to take it down to $750 from $800.

Apple, which released the fourth-generation iPad Pro in March, claims that the tablet powered by the A12Z chip is faster and more powerful than most Windows laptops. The latest version of the iPad Pro, however, remains easy to handle with a width of only 5.9mm and weight of only 471 grams. The Liquid Retina IPS

Apple’s New iPad Air Equipped With 4GB RAM

Benchmarks leaked over the weekend gave us some insight into the performance of the A14 Bionic chip in the iPad Air that’s set to launch soon, and also revealed another tidbit — Apple’s newest tablet has 4GB RAM.

That’s 1GB over the prior-generation iPad Air that had an A12 Bionic processor, but less RAM than is available in the iPad Pro models. Apple’s 2020 ‌iPad Pro‌ models all have 6GB RAM.

With the jump in RAM and the impressive performance of the A14 chip, the new ‌iPad‌ Air is quite a bit speedier than the prior-generation model, plus it has the all-display design with Touch ID Home button, a first for Apple.

The A14 ‌iPad‌ Air Geekbench result that was leaked featured a single-core score of 1583 and a multi-core score of 4198, a solid improvement over the single-core score of 1112 and multi-core score of 2832 earned by the

Power button Touch ID on the iPad Air 4 was an ‘incredible feat’

A pair of Apple executives have discussed changes to the iPad introduced in the iPad Air 4, including the “incredible feat of engineering” to add a Touch ID sensor to the power button on the new model.

Apple revealed its iPad Air 4 on September 15, complete with an updated A14 Bionic chip, a design inspired by the iPad Pro line, and a larger 10.9-inch display. Arguably the biggest departure for the iPad Air is its biometric alterations, with Touch ID moved from the now-gone Home button to the power button on the top.

Speaking on the iJustine and Jenna Ezarik podcast Same Brain published on Saturday, Apple VP of hardware engineering John Ternus and Apple VP of product marketing Bob Borchers talked about the changes that the iPad lineup underwent during the September event.

On the subject of Touch ID on the tablet, Borchers described the

YouTube 4K has now come to Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, but no HDR or 60fps on TV

“A big frustration with the Apple TV 4K is about to be history,” my colleague Chris Welch wrote, when we learned that Apple’s premiere set-top box would finally be able play 4K YouTube videos at their native resolution instead of being stuck at 1080p. These days, even a $40 dongle can do better than that.

But though Apple’s latest software updates did bring YouTube 4K to the Apple TV 4K, the frustrations aren’t necessarily over. It turns out you’re limited to watching 4K at 30fps, instead of a smooth 60 frames per second, and without the depth of color and contrast that High Dynamic Range (HDR) provides. That’s what 9to5Mac noticed yesterday, and we’ve confirmed with Google that — for now — Apple TV only supports 4K at 30fps with SDR content.

On the plus side, the latest iPhones and iPads do
