In Part 1, we looked at how industrial-scale distributed generating plants (typically hundreds of kilowatts to tens of megawatts), powered by renewable energy, are playing an important role in creating a new generation of more resilient, more sustainable power grids. We also saw that, regardless whether they make power from the sun’s distant rays or a nearby city’s sewage sludge, they’re still subject to the same technical requirements for regulating, conditioning, and distributing their output through the power grid as their larger fossil-fueled counterparts.

Teachers play a critical role in shaping girls’ future as coders

The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work.

The big idea

It doesn’t take long to help girls see a future for themselves in computer science, but it depends largely on how good their teachers are at recognizing the skills the girls have in coding, which is basically writing language for computers. We found that girls ages 10 to 12 can come to see themselves as coders in as little as a week. And there are diverse roles within the world of coding that allow girls with various personalities and skill sets to see themselves as coders. However, if educators recognize girls only for when they play a background role and help others, but not when they are more assertive and confident, then they may not develop their assertiveness and confidence in a way that enables them to succeed as coders.

Hong Kong’s financial sector, its use of financial technology and role as a fundraising centre for the cities of southern China have weathered the coronavirus outbreak and even thrived in some areas, according to a panel of industry players.

The city’s finance sector has remained “vibrant” despite the health crisis, as unemployment in the sector remained below 3 per cent, much better than the overall figure of 6.1 per cent , said Rocky Tung, head of policy research on the Financial Services Development Council, a government advisory body.

“The development of the (Greater Bay Area) has been continuous. The financial sector is relatively less affected by Covid. In terms of trading (and) IPOs, we are also very vibrant,” said Tung.

“I have taken pains to verify this assertion, and have found it true that frogs, toads, and newts are absent from most oceanic islands”—thus states Charles Darwin in his well-known work “On the Origin of Species.” For a long time, this observation by the famous naturalist also held true for the Galápagos Islands, which are inextricably linked to his name. “This only changed with the arrival of Fowler’s snouted treefrog Scinax quinquefasciatus on the archipelago in 1997 or 1998,” explains Dr. habil.
