The cybersecurity skills gap: California educates the workforce of the future

California is a beacon for global innovation, home of Silicon Valley and a center for space tech. Its economy outpaces many nations, beating both the Russian Federation and Italy for gross domestic product. Big name enterprise players, the U.S. military, and government all vie for top talent; and there isn’t enough to go around.

“There’s over 37,000 vacancies that we know of in California just alone in cybersecurity,” said Stewart Knox (pictured), undersecretary at the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency.

And demand is forecast to grow. As aerospace innovators break business free of the confines of gravity, the need to secure satellites and space-based operations is going to boom.

20 Technology Skills Wanted By Amazon, Other Top Employers


Software developers, network engineers and systems engineers were the top three technology roles that employers were trying to fill in the second quarter, while SQL, project management and Java were most in-demand skills, according to a new report from Dice that focuses on tech hiring trends amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Recruits with programming language skills in Java, Python and C++ were at the top of the list for Amazon, which Dice ranked as the top tech employer during the second quarter.

There was continued growth among infrastructure-related tech occupations and emerging U.S. tech hub cities during the April-to-May period, even while tech job postings nationwide decline, according to Dice, a Centennial, Co.-based tech jobs site.

APS Congressional Science Fellow Put Scientific Skills to Use During COVID-19 Crisis

Prior to dealing with the coronavirus health crisis, Gladstone said the first step in her fellowship was getting acclimated to working in US Sen. Gary Peters’ office. Peters, who represents Michigan, is the Ranking Member of the HSGAC.

“Each Senator’s office runs differently, like each professor’s research group functions differently. I started by taking notes at constituent meetings, briefings, and hearings (and learning the difference between those). I summarized other people’s positions into one-page decision memos, and in doing so, learned about their work and how the office flows,” she said.

Gladstone recalled there was plenty of work to do to stay on top of the health crisis.

“From January to March, we were getting reports, preparing for hearings, and working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. I sent notes around my office from COVID-19 hearings, explaining the difference between COVID-19 and SARS-COV-2,” she said.
