From iPhones to e-axles: how one tech firm is pushing into electric vehicles

(Reuters) – The miniature motors that make iPhones buzz on silent helped power Japan’s Nidec to become a 1.5-trillion-yen ($14 billion) company.

In recent years, Nidec’s founder Shigenobu Nagamori has turned his attention to autos, and a technology which turns electricity stored in the battery into propulsion power.

This technology, called an e-axle or e-drive, is emerging as a new competitive front as the auto industry shifts to electric vehicles. By 2030, Nagamori says he wants a 35% slice of a global e-axle market that is forecast to be worth $20-30 billion a year by then, up from an estimated $2.8-$3 billion now.

He is betting that electric cars will follow the same route as room aircons, washing machines and computers, with key components, such as motor systems

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden laid out his vision for manufacturing during a Monday stop in Toledo, vowing to emphasize union labor and make it easier for consumers to “move to the vehicles of the future.”

Biden spoke for about 25 minutes at a drive-in rally outside a United Auto Workers union hall in the Ohio city that borders Michigan 22 days before the Nov. 3 election. Amazon Ramps Up Delivery Business With Rivian Electric Vehicles To Reach Climate Goals

As Amazon (AMZN) continues the expansion of its delivery fleet, the online retailer has revealed its electric delivery van developed in partnership with Rivian.

The all-electric vans have begun to arrive just a year after Amazon made a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040. The company has plans to take delivery of 100,000 electric vans from Rivian by 2030, with 10,000 expected to be on the roads by 2022.

The Rivian vans were developed to “enhance the driver experience and optimize safety” with a customized configuration that comes in three different models. Drone truck startup Einride unveils new driverless vehicles for autonomous freight hauling

Einride, the Swedish autonomous trucking startup, unveiled a new vehicle type that the company hopes to have on the road delivering freight starting in 2021. The vehicles, dubbed Autonomous Electric Transport (AET), came in four different variations. And much like Einride’s previous prototypes, they come without steering wheels, pedals, windshields, and, in general, no cab at all.

The Senate Wednesday queried the Ministry of Science and Technology for giving out two vehicles worth N17 million to pay the debt of N2 million owned contractors.

The two vehicles with registration numbers are M50-101G and MGO-12FG respectively.

The revelation came up following the 2015 Auditor-General Report submitted to the Senator Matthew Urhoghide, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Edo South led Senate Committee on Public Accounts.

According to the Auditor General of the Federation, Anthony Ayine in the report submitted to the Committee, he said that during the verification of non-recurrent assets of the Ministry, it was discovered that two vehicles with registration M50-101G and MGO-12FG respectively were not seen and their whereabouts was not explained.

In his presentation, Director, Public Accounts in office of the Auditor General of the Federation, OAuGF, the two vehicles were seized by contractors.

Over 700,000 Ford Vehicles Recalled as Rearview Camera Goes Dark, Distorts Images

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall of more than 700,000 of its vehicles in North America following an issue with their rearview cameras, which can suddenly go dark or show distorted images.

The recall applies to most 2020 versions of Ford’s F-Series trucks, the 2020 Explorer, Mustang, Transit, Expedition, Escape, Ranger and Edge, as well as the Lincoln Nautilus and Corsair, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The company is unaware of any crashes or injuries caused by the latest issue, AP reported.

The problem was said to be caused by a poor electrical connection, the company noted in documents posted Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
