In the vice presidential debate, only one candidate looked into the camera and spoke to ‘you’

Because television is a visual medium, what is seen often registers more vividly than what is said. From prestige dramas to reality-show schlock, TV relies on character contrasts, the sharper the better. Much the same is true of politics, whose practitioners like to speak of the importance of “optics.”

Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris was a study in contrasts that went well beyond their parties and positions. It may not have been riveting television, but it was revealing television.

The most significant difference, of course, was built into the evening from the start. History was made by the simple act of Harris, the first woman of color on a major-party ticket, sharing a stage (from a distance of 12 feet) with Pence. Another welcome, impossible-to-miss distinction was the evening’s civility compared with last week’s demolition derby masquerading as a presidential debate, which featured President

Why There Are More Animals From North America In South America Than Vice Versa

KEY POINTS

  • There was an exchange of animals from North and South America during the GABI
  • Why there were more animals of North American origin in South America than vice versa has been a mystery
  • A team of researchers may have found an explanation for the disparity
  • It’s possible that many South American mammals actually went extinct

Why are there more South American animals of North American origins than North American animals of South American origin? A team of researchers found a possible explanation for the long-held puzzle.

The American continents weren’t always connected but tens of millions of years ago when the land bridge of Panama formed and connected North and South America, there was an exchange of animals between the once separated lands. Called the Great American Biotic Exchange (GABI), it is considered as one of the greatest biogeographical events.

However, one thing that has been puzzling paleontologists

Vice Media is once again working to distance itself from its co-founder, Gavin McInnes, who set much of the tone for the company in its early days before going on to found the Proud Boys, the far-right group whose ideology has been labeled “misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigration” by the Anti-Defamation League.

Vice News releases body camera video that purports to show moments after officers raided Breonna Taylor’s apartment

One video shows an officer, which Vice News says appears to be former Detective Brett Hankison, entering Taylor’s apartment after the shootings and ask about shell casings that are on the floor. He’s soon told by another unidentified officer that he should “back out” until LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit arrives. Hankison’s attorney declined to comment on the video.

No officer who took part in the March 13 raid was charged for Taylor’s actual killing. A grand jury instead leveled three counts of felony wanton endangerment against Hankison, state Attorney General Daniel Cameron said last week. The counts pertain to Hankison allegedly firing blindly through a door and window, with bullets entering an adjacent apartment where a pregnant woman, a man and a child were home, according to the state attorney general.

In another video, which Vice News says was the moment Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker was arrested, an unidentified … Read More
