Sanford Research launches science distance-learning website

In an ever increasingly digital ingrained world, no knowledge is out of reach — and that adage is one step closer to a reality with Sanford Reasearch’s newly launched digital lab for parents, teachers and students.

Sanford Research launched its first science distance-learning website in a world that has been forced to adjust to the changing times as the coronavirus pandemic forces many eager minds behind a computer screen. This resource from the Sanford PROMISE, (Program for the Midwest Initiative in Science Exploration) for parents, teachers and students is making scientific education accessible just in time for remote learning.

There is a physical PROMISE lab located in Sioux Falls, SD that has had more than 9,000 visitors. Here, students can participate in hands-on science activities and witness Sanford Research scientists in action.

To suit students unable to visit PROMISE lab, whether it be because of distance or social distancing, the website was developed to reach out to those students and inspire them to become future scientists and innovators.It broken into three sections; Elementary, Middle School and High School. Each one specifically geared to incite creativity, thought process and self development. PROMISE is free for anyone to use and includes lesson plans, printable resources, educational slideshows and videos.

“When schools stopped visiting us in person because of the pandemic, we were already in development,” said Amy Baete, director of Sanford Children’s Health Initiative Operations. “Now we can offer out-of-the-classroom experiences virtually until we’re ready to welcome visitors again.”

Students can explore careers, learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and see what’s happening at Sanford Research. Keeping them engaged into the better half of what the digital has to offer.

“My students have loved the PROMISE lessons,” said Kylie Szwarc, a fourth grade teacher in Sioux Falls. “They come away from them using vocabulary and a deeper understanding of topics than with previous lessons. Also, they are so excited about science after finishing these lessons.”
