(Reuters) – Apple Inc on Tuesday launched its next-generation iPhone 12, with faster 5G connectivity that the California company hopes will spur consumers to trade in their old phones and keep its sales booming through the end of the year.
The core of the line-up, the iPhone 12 with a 6.1-inch display, will sell for $799, while a ‘Mini’ version with a 5.4-inch screen will be slightly cheaper at $699. A ‘Pro’ version with three cameras and a new 3-D ‘lidar’ sensor starts at $999, with the largest ‘Pro Max’ starting at $1,099 and going up to $1,399.
The new products will test whether Apple can ride a wave of consumer excitement around 5G wireless data networks, whose speediest variants outstrip their predecessors’ data rates multiple times over.
But whether iPhone buyers see a dramatic speed boost will depend heavily on where they are and which carrier they use –
Apple’s iPhones just got a lot faster. During its virtual event Tuesday, the company unveiled its iPhone 12 lineup — and all four new devices come with 5G, including the ultra-fast millimeter wave version. The company’s 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Max pack in some of the biggest advances Apple has made in years.
The two middle phones go on sale next week (preorders begin this Friday), while the Mini and Max arrive in mid-November. The starting prices range from $699 for the Mini — making it one of the cheapest premium 5G phones on the
Apple added an Apple Pay landing page to its regional Mexico website late on Tuesday, indicating the mobile payment system could launch in the country imminently.
Way back in March there were suggestions that Apple Pay could be coming to Mexico, after reports that some iPhone users in the country had been able to add their Banregio cards to the Wallet app, with only the verification process failing.
Cards from banks other than Banregio were not able to be added to the Wallet app on the iPhone, suggesting Apple Pay in Mexico could be limited to Banregio at launch.
That’s still uncertain, since the Apple Pay page on Apple’s Mexican website offers no launch date and doesn’t list any banks that will integrate with the service. All it says is Apple Pay will be compatible with “credit and debit cards of the most important payment networks, issued by various banks,”
Another year, another iPhone. (Did I say that last year?) This is the iPhone’s last year of tweendom before it hits teenhood: Apple announced its four-model iPhone 12 line on Tuesday, the first major revamp of the iPhone’s design since 2017’s iPhone X, which introduced face unlocking and better screen technology. This year they sport an array of colors, more models and 5G wireless support across the lineup. In addition to the HomePod Mini smart speaker, we were treated to the MagSafe wireless charging system for the iPhone and a stealth release of the $50 Beats Flex wireless headphones.

“5G just got real,” Verizon chief executive Hans Vestberg said onstage, as he touted his company’s plans to double its availability in some cities and roll out to 60 new markets by the end of 2020.
But in reality, 5G remains a work in progress throughout the United States.
Access to 5G networks is limited to a handful of U.S. cities, and in some instances, it’s currently slower than 4G speeds, my colleague Geoffrey Fowler has found through tests with multiple phones. And my colleagues note that the fastest early deployments have been concentrated in areas most Americans aren’t visiting very much since the pandemic began — such as stadiums.
“It will likely be a few more years before we see what kind of revolution 5G will bring about in the tech world,” Stan Adams, the deputy general counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said in an email.
Apple brought all its usual glamour to the unveiling of its latest iPhones 12 yesterday. There was breathless exclamation over the new colors. There were speeches about chip speed. Then there’s the less breakable ceramic cover. And don’t think a LiDAR is only for those self-driving cars made by Waymo. The new Pro line of iPhones also have it now. The LiDAR will boost augmented reality (AR).
The real punch was the new 5G wireless speeds and here is where the problem lies. For the first time, Apple and iPhone are ahead of the foundational technology.

Steve Jobs warned against the danger of being too early. “Things happen fairly slowly, you know. They
Anyone who buys a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod touch, or Apple TV after October 22nd gets free three-month trial of Apple Arcade, Apple has announced. Apple’s games subscription service normally costs $4.99 a month, and gives you access to over 100 downloadable games with no ads or in-game purchases.
Apple has long used lengthy free trial periods to advertise its subscription services. When it launched Apple TV Plus last year it gave customers a whole year of the service for free with the purchase of an eligible device, and recently extended these trials by up to three months. Three months is also the standard trial period for Apple Music. Until now, however, Apple has only offered a one month free trial of Apple Arcade with new sign-ups.
During the unveiling of HomePod mini at Tuesday’s Apple event, Apple introduced an upcoming new feature called Intercom that works across all Apple devices with the exception, it would seem, of Mac.
Intercom will enable family members to communicate with each other wherever they are in the home, with the ability to send and receive spoken messages via HomePod speakers. If a family member is in the garden or away from home, they can still use Intercom on their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and even CarPlay. Apple explains:
A new Intercom feature offers a quick and easy way for family members to connect with each other at home. One person can send an Intercom message from one HomePod to another — whether in a different room, a specific zone, or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated HomePod speaker. Intercom works with
Apple finally took the wraps off the iPhone 12 series last night. This year, the Cupertino-based giant did things a bit differently like launching four iPhone variants, or putting its Super Retina XDR OLED display across the whole range. Apple announced that all the iPhone 12 models will come with 5G support, and all will be powered by the same A14 Bionic chip that Apple first introduced with the iPad Air last month. Apple has priced the new iPhone’s starting at Rs. 69,900 onwards for the iPhone 12 Mini, while the iPhone 12 costs Rs. 79,900 onwards. The iPhone 12 flagship models, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have been priced at Rs. 1,19,900 and Rs. 1,29,900 onwards on Apple official online store. The
