Apple’s 2020 iPhone Event Had An Unmistakable Undercurrent That Was All About Accessibility

Apple this morning held its second event in as many months, announcing a new HomePod Mini and a range of new iPhones. The iPhone is undeniably Apple’s crown jewel product, and the new ones look as stellar as ever, while the baby HomePod feels like something Cupertino should’ve launched years ago.

Forget 5G networking. Forget the Pro Max’s LiDAR sensor and fancy camera tricks. Forget the (albeit delightful) new color finishes on both iPhones. Forget HomePod Mini doesn’t (for now?) support Spotify. If you’re someone who cares deeply about accessibility, disabled or not, the high-level take from today’s announcement was unmistakable. Everything Apple announced today has some sort of accessibility story that will define the user experience for legions of buyers with disabilities. It’s yet another lesson that accessible hardware matters just as much as accessible software.

Look no further than the reintroduction of MagSafe to the Apple

Here’s what to expect from Apple’s iPhone 12 event [Video]

Yahoo Finance’s Tech Editor Dan Howley joins The First Trade with Alexis Christoforous and Brian Sozzi to discuss what we can expect from Tuesday’s Apple iPhone launch event.

Video Transcript

ALEXIS CHRISTOFOROUS: We are just about three hours away from Apple’s big event, and all of us will know details about the latest iPhone. But will 5G be worth the upgrade? Our tech editor Dan Howley is here with more, and, Dan, busy day for you. What are you looking out for from Tim Cook later?

DAN HOWLEY: So we’re really expecting the four new iPhones to be the star of the show. These are going to have different sized screens and come in at different price points. There’s been reports that the lowest price will be $649 for what’s going to be called the iPhone 12 Mini. That will have a 5.4-inch display. And then the largest will be

A Look At Apple’s 5G IPhone Lineup

Apple’s four new iPhones announced Tuesday will be 5G capable of connecting to the fast new wireless networks which are being upgraded worldwide.

Apple’s release comes after testing its 5G usage with more than 100 wireless carriers around the world. Here is a look at the devices:

The iPhone 12 is the successor to the top-selling iPhone 11 launched last year and has a display of 6.1 inches. At a starting price of $799, it will be available October 23 in more than 30 countries.

The handset will be powered by Apple’s own A14 Bionic processor with a dual-camera, using what the company called “computational photography,” or digital technology to get the best images in all conditions.

Apple said the IPhone 12 will use a “smart data mode” that will assess 5G needs and balance speed and battery life automatically.

Apple calls the iPhone 12 mini “the smallest, thinnest, and

Apple’s iPhone 12 can wirelessly charge twice as fast, but only with a MagSafe charger

Apple’s new iPhone 12 line will be able to access faster wireless charging speeds of 15W in line with the most up-to-date Qi standard, but there’s a catch: you’ll have to use Apple’s new MagSafe brand of charger or a MagSafe-compatible one from a third-party accessory maker.

Apple reintroduced its MagSafe branding for the iPhone with the announcement of its new smartphone line on Tuesday, and the company now touts a new feature in which “magnets align themselves perfectly every time for faster wireless charging” on its product page. But what Apple didn’t explicitly mention is that only its proprietary MagSafe brand, and not chargers using the general Qi charging standard it’s based on, can use those faster speeds.

Noted on the tech specs page for the new iPhone 12 line is a clearer breakdown that lists 15W for
