Call me! How technology is changing our hand gestures | Science

Name: Hand gestures.

Age: Older than language.

Appearance: Demonstrative hand signals encoding commonly understood meanings.

I don’t follow you. Can you give me an example of what you’re talking about? Certainly: placing a fist alongside your head, thumb and little finger extended, in the manner of a man trying to scratch his chin and his ear at the same time.

OK. And what does that mean? Can’t you guess?

Does it mean: “My ear and my chin both itch”? No! It means: “Call me.”

What? How do you figure that? It’s miming holding a phone – the thumb is the earpiece, the little finger is the mouthpiece, and the fist is pretending to grab the long bit in between.

You’ve seen a phone, right? I guess it wouldn’t make much sense if you’ve only ever used a flat, rectangular mobile.

You’re correct, it wouldn’t. Give me a better example.

How Realistic Is Novak Djokovic’s Call For Tennis Line Judges To Be Replaced By Technology?

Tennis player Novak Djokovic has suggested the sport dispense with human line judges and replace them with technology.

The current world number one men’s player made the comments at the French Open after his straight-set fourth-round victory over Karen Khachanov, during which he accidentally hit the ball into a line judge’s face when returning a serve.

Normally, this would be deemed an unfortunate but unremarkable tennis incident. However, it came just weeks after the Serb was ejected from the US Open for inadvertently hitting a ball at the throat of a line judge in New York.

Black scientists call out racism in the field and counter it

The recent episode of a White woman calling the police on a Black birder in New York’s Central Park shocked many people. But for Black environmental scientists, worrying about whether they are likely to be harassed or asked to justify their presence while doing fieldwork is a familiar concern.

Tanisha Williams, a botanist at Bucknell University, knows which plants she’s looking for. But after being questioned by strangers in public parks, Williams, who is Black, has started carrying her field guides with her.

“I’ve been quizzed by random strangers,” she said. “Now I bring my wildflower books and botanical field guides, trying to look like a scientist. It’s for other people. I wouldn’t otherwise lug these books.”

Overt harassment and subtle intimidation during fieldwork compound the discrimination that Black scientists and those from other underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds already feel in academic settings.

Volvo On Call Smartphone App Receives New Functionality

From Autoweek

With every new car reveal, there’s at least a mention of new connectivity between your phone and car. Volvo took a slightly different approach and increased connectivity between your phone, your car, and your car’s dealership. Called Volvo On Call, it’s an app first developed in 2015 and has since steadily increased functionality. And now that includes booking service appointments.

With the app, you can schedule an appointment at any time. It automatically finds the nearest Volvo dealer to you and has access to the dealer management system so you have real time schedule availability. If the service you need is among common maintenance or repairs, the app gives cost estimates for the work as well.

Moreover, using Volvo’s Valet service, you can have your car picked up and a loaner car dropped off for you to use while the car is in service, and vice versa. To

NVIDIA Just Gave Call Of Duty Gamers With GeForce Cards An Edge

One of the technologies NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang unveiled during the GeForce RTX 30-series launch event was NVIDIA Reflex. For those unfamiliar with it, NVIDIA Reflex is latency reduction technology that’s designed to minimize input lag, sometimes called input latency or end-to-end latency. That’s a fancy way of defining how long it takes for something to happen on-screen after a mouse click or keyboard input.

NVIDIA Reflex works by streamlining a few steps along the rendering pipeline to reduce overall latency. NVIDIA’s software tweaks to enable Reflex make more efficient use of available CPU and GPU resources and minimize driver overhead, which according to NVIDIA, can reduce latency by up to 50% in games that are updated to properly support the technology. That means when a gamer clicks their mouse button to fire a weapon or whips their mouse around to

Tech ETF outflows send a wake-up call after sizzling rally

By Saikat Chatterjee and Thyagaraju Adinarayan

LONDON (Reuters) – Passive investors, the backbone of the Nasdaq’s rally this year, seem to have lost their nerve, pulling massive amounts of cash in recent days from index-tracking technology funds in what many see as an ominous sign for the sector.

With the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 down more than 13% after a record 84% rally off March lows — in correction territory — many investors are speculating that a reversal could pick up speed as a COVID-19 vaccine gets closer.

Goldman Sachs, for example, predicts at least one vaccine will be approved by the end of this year. That should help broader markets but weaken the case for shares in companies that benefit when people are forced to stay home, whether cloud computing or e-commerce.

But exchange-traded funds, which accounted for most of this year’s tech sector inflows, may be the ones to
