AMD reveals Ryzen 5000-series chips with towering gaming performance

As promised, AMD is preparing to launch its next generation of Ryzen CPUs. These chips have the Zen 3 architecture, which reuses a lot of what makes the Zen 2 so speedy. But AMD’s engineers have made revisions that should lead to a significant performance gain. In a presentation today, AMD chief executive officer Lisa Su claimed that Zen 3 is 19% faster than the previous generation across a wide variety of workloads. I’ll test it to see if that’s the case, but AMD seems confident.

The Ryzen 5000-series CPUs begin rolling out November 5. This includes the $800 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, which boosts up to 4.9GHz and the $550 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X. For the slightly more mainstream chips, AMD also has the 8-core Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 5 5600X for $450 and $300, respectively.

Several rumors have indicated that Apple is working on a refreshed Apple TV, and Fudge, a leaker who goes by @choco_bit on Twitter, today shared some new information on what we can expect.


In a tweet, Fudge claims that Apple is preparing multiple new Apple TV set-top boxes, with a model featuring a variant of the A12 chip and one with an “A14X-like” chip. Fudge also mentions that a new controller is in the works, but it is unclear if the tweet is referencing an updated Siri Remote or a new, Apple-designed game controller.

Intel wins second phase of contract to help Pentagon develop chips

(Reuters) – Intel Corp on Friday said that it has won a second-phase contract in a project aimed at helping the U.S. military make more advanced semiconductors within the United States.

Under the project, Intel will help the military develop prototypes of chips using its semiconductor packaging technology at factories in Arizona and Oregon. The packaging technology allows pieces of chips called “chiplets” from different providers to be combined into one package, helping cram more features into a smaller finished product while lowering its power consumption.

Intel declined to disclose a dollar figure for its portion of the contract, which is being overseen by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division. Intel won part of the first phase of the contract in 2019.

Nvidia Teams with VMware to Make Mellanox’s Chips More Versatile

Five months after closing its $7 billion purchase of networking interconnect and chip developer Mellanox Technologies, Nvidia  (NVDA) – Get Report is teaming with VMware  (VMW) – Get Report to expand the capabilities of Mellanox’s silicon.

On Tuesday — the start of VMware’s annual VMworld conference — Nvidia and VMware announced a pair of partnerships.

One of the partnerships involves the Nvidia GPU Cloud (NGC), a set of software tools and pre-trained deep learning models meant to help developers quickly get AI projects relying on Nvidia GPUs up and running. Fish lovers have been urged to switch to sustainable alternatives – including jellyfish and chips – after a survey found critically endangered species being sold and eaten.

Researchers from the University of Queensland warned that 92 endangered species and 11 critically endangered species were being industrially fished in oceans around the world.

Jellyfish is eaten in several Asian countries, including in jellyfish salads and even ice cream. The scientists also proposed increased use of shellfish such as abalone.

This research is published in Nature Communications.

Many consumers in Australia wrongly eat industrially-produced fish thinking it has been produced sustainably, researchers said.
