Neutron star collision continues to emit X-rays, puzzling astronomers

When two neutron stars smashed into each other, about 130 million light-years from Earth, the universe lit up. The collision, between some of the densest objects in the cosmos, produced gravitational waves and a spattering of fireworks on Aug. 17, 2017. Dozens of telescopes on Earth captured the rare merger across different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. First, there came a burst of highly energetic gamma rays, followed by bursts of light and UV, radio and infrared signals.

About nine days after the collision, NASA’s Chandra observatory picked up an X-ray signal. According to our understanding of neutron stars, it should have faded away by now.

But in a new study, published Monday in the journal Monthly Notices

With Pixel 5, Google continues its fight for smartphone relevance

In 2016, Google’s newly appointed hardware chief, Rick Osterloh, stood on a stage in San Francisco and unveiled a product that many people in the industry never thought would come: a Google-branded phone.

For years, a “GPhone” to compete with the iPhone had been a mythic prospect — a device that Android fanboys believed could properly take on Apple’s smartphone. The Pixel, with its premium build and high-end price tag, seemed primed to contend. It was glossy and chic, even drawing comparisons to the iPhone’s appearance. It had a remarkable camera with advanced photography software. But it entered a market already dominated by the likes of Apple and Samsung, two of the most popular phone makers in the world.

4 Stocks to Buy if the Stock Market Tech Wreck Continues

This has been a history-making year in more ways than one. The unprecedented coronavirus pandemic initially clobbered equities and sent them into a first-quarter tailspin. The 34% the benchmark S&P 500 lost in under five weeks represents the quickest bear market decline of at least 30% in history.

Following this historic plunge, investors saw the S&P 500 recoup everything that was initially lost (and then some) in a roughly five-month rally. This marked the quickest recovery on record from a bear market bottom to fresh highs.

Now history appears to be repeating itself. You see, over the past eight bear markets dating back to 1960, there have been a grand total of 13 corrections ranging between 10% and 19.9% within three years. This is to say that bear market bounces don’t simply go straight up. Every bounce inevitably leads to one or two sizable corrections.

ECMO outcomes study at experienced centers suggests key role for treating worst-hit patients as pandemic continues — ScienceDaily

It saved lives in past epidemics of lung-damaging viruses. Now, the life-support option known as ECMO appears to be doing the same for many of the critically ill COVID-19 patients who receive it, according to a new international study.

The 1,035 patients in the study faced a staggeringly high risk of death, as ventilators and other care failed to support their lungs. But after they were placed on ECMO, their actual death rate was less than 40%. That’s similar to the rate for patients treated with ECMO in past outbreaks of lung-damaging viruses, and other severe forms of viral pneumonia.

The new study published in The Lancet provides strong support for the use of ECMO — short for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation — in appropriate patients as the pandemic rages on worldwide.

It may help more hospitals that have ECMO capability understand which of their COVID-19 patients might benefit from the

US Stocks End Higher as Market Volatility Continues | Business News

By STAN CHOE, DAMIAN J. TROISE and ALEX VEIGA, AP Business Writers

U.S. stocks are closing slightly higher Thursday, as volatility continues to be the dominant force in Wall Street’s tumultuous September. The S&P 500 was 0.3% higher after having been close to a correction earlier. The day’s headline report showed that 870,000 workers filed for unemployment claims last week, a worse number than economists expected. Investors also weighed a report on home sales that was much stronger than economists expected. Technology stocks ended up as the biggest gainers, and only health care sector stocks fell. The market’s momentum has shifted with lightning speed recently, often changing direction by the hour.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story appears below.

U.S. stocks are down in late-afternoon trading Thursday after shedding early gains as volatility continues to be the dominant force in Wall Street’s tumultuous September.

The S&P 500

Extended reach technology continues to evolve

Definitions of extended reach drilling can vary, but in most cases ERD wells will have a step-out twice the true vertical depth.

Extended reach drilling (ERD) has evolved rapidly in recent decades to reach reserves further and faster. Technology such as rotary steerable systems, high-torque drill pipe connections and rotational, friction reduction tools have enabled this but cannot alone ensure success. When it comes to ERD, people can be the limiting factor. Both must work in unison.

Definitions of extended reach drilling vary. Most often it is described in terms of the position of the well, with ERD wells having a horizontal displacement (the step-out) twice the true vertical depth (TVD). No definition is perfect, however.

For a start, the step-out ratio is somewhat arbitrary. There is a spectrum between ERD and vertical drilling. Some directional drilling, which falls short of the former’s definition, poses similar
