The latest on UGA football and basketball games with Georgia Tech and other schedule updates – Sports – Savannah Morning News

ATHENS — Georgia’s football game with Georgia Tech in 2021 will remain as scheduled to be held in Atlanta even with the teams not playing in Athens this year, Bulldogs athletic director Greg McGarity said.

The in-state rivals will not go up against each other this season for the first time since 1924 after the SEC decided to play a conference-only schedule due to the pandemic. The ACC allowed for one nonconference game played in the school’s home state.

“I think if the shoe were on the other foot, it’s not that you push the game back a year, but it would take both schools to agree to do that and obviously Tech has no interest in doing that,” McGarity said. “We’ll just basically be in Atlanta in 2021. It’s unfortunate but it’s just where things stand.”

Syracuse breaks out of rut, defeats Georgia Tech 37-20

“He really did his job,” Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. “He really went after it. We like guys who are hit at the 20 but not tackled until the 25 or 26.”

Jeff Sims completed 13 of 28 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown for the Yellow Jackets but had four interceptions at the hands of the opportunistic defense.

“Big focus all week was on not turning the ball over. Obviously, we didn’t do that,” said Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins. “Finishing in the red zone, finishing drives, obviously didn’t do that. That’s on me. I’ve go to do a better job getting guys ready. We have to protect the football.”

Jahmyr Gibbs, a freshman playing in just his second game for Tech, had 105 yards, the first 100-yard game of his brief career. Dontae Smith had a career-high 75 yards rushing.

Syracuse had scored 16 points, one touchdown

Syracuse hosts Georgia Tech; first game in renovated Dome

AP
Published 5:30 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2020

Syracuse coach Dino Babers didn’t see the big improvement he expected when his Orange dropped their second straight road game to start the season. He remains upbeat.

“We’re barely misfiring on stuff. It looks big to everybody else. It’s small to us,” Babers said. “We’ve got to take care of those little things. If you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves. I’m looking for the day when we come out of the clouds, when we get out of the smoke, and everybody sees what we can do.”

Playing the first game inside the newly renovated Carrier Dome might provide that boost. Syracuse (0-2, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) hosts Georgia Tech (1-1, 1-0) on Saturday in a rare trip north for the Yellow Jackets.

The game comes 40 years and six days after the first
