Apple issues third iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1 developer betas

Apple is on a brand new round of developer betas, with the third batch available to download for iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1, and tvOS 14.2.

The newest builds can be downloaded via the Apple Developer Center for those enrolled into the test program, or via an over-the-air update on devices running the beta software. Public betas typically arrive within a few days of the developer versions, via the Apple Beta Software Program website.

The latest batch of betas replace the second round, issued on September 29, and the first on September 17, one day after Apple released the milestone versions of each operating system.

Continuing to be the outlier of the group, macOS Big Sur has yet to see a release of its milestone version, and has previously undertaken nine beta releases. The ninth build appeared on September 29, while the eighth was on September 22.

Spotify Developing iOS 14 Widgets in Latest Beta

One of the big new features of iOS 14 is Home Screen widgets, which provide information from apps at a glance. The ‌widgets‌ can be pinned to the ‌Home Screen‌ in various spots and sizes, allowing for many different layouts.

Many third-party apps have released ‌widgets‌, and now evidence that Spotify is developing its own official widget has appeared in a TestFlight beta.

The widget is currently available in small and medium sizes, with the former designed to display the artwork of the last played artist, song, or album, while the latter size shows four of the same content elements.

Unfortunately there are no play, pause, or next song buttons, since Apple only allows ‌widgets‌ to present read-only information, with interactive elements such as scrolling elements or switches not allowed, presumably due to battery life considerations.

‘Fortnite’ Has Given Up 73 Million iOS Only Users In Order To Fight Against Apple

Another day, another update that does not sound terribly good for Epic in its ongoing fight against Apple, as the Fortnite developer tries to get some regulation in place to ensure that the 30% cut Apple takes in its iOS app store is altered or the platform opens up more to competition.

A court has just ruled that for now, Apple cannot be forced to put Fortnite back on the app store, after it was taken off due to breaking the rules there by sidestepping the 30% cut with an update that allowed direct payment to Epic. But they also said Apple cannot take further, more destructive action against Epic by going after the entire Unreal engine, which would cause a ton of collateral damage to games and apps not owned by Epic at all.

Microsoft’s Apple workaround: How Xbox could bring Project xCloud to iOS via the web in 2021

Microsoft is working on a browser-based edition of its cloud gaming service Project xCloud, according to multiple reports. Business Insider reported that Xbox chief Phil Spencer told Microsoft employees at a meeting Wednesday that the company will pursue a “direct browser-based solution” for bringing the cloud-based, multi-platform version of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service to Apple’s family of devices. Microsoft Reportedly Bringing Xbox Game Pass To iOS As Browser App

Microsoft’s gaming boss Phil Spencer told employees that the company is planning to bring Xbox Game Pass streaming to Apple’s iPad and iPhone devices using a “direct browser-based solution,” according to a Business Insider report.

“We absolutely will end up on iOS,” Spencer reportedly told employees this week. According to The Verge, Spencer also mentioned bringing this browser solution to Windows 10 PCs next year.

Microsoft’s game-streaming portion of Xbox Game Pass has so far only been available on Android as Apple at first blocked it and similar services such as Google Stadia, but then agreed to allow those apps onto its iOS devices provided that there were separate apps for each game. Microsoft is bringing xCloud to iOS via the web

Microsoft is working on a “direct browser-based solution” to bring xCloud to iOS early next year. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company has been developing a web version of xCloud to run on iOS and iPadOS devices, alongside continuing its work on an app that it hopes will also eventually run on Apple’s platform.





Microsoft’s gaming chief, Phil Spencer, revealed the company’s browser-based xCloud work during a recent internal all-hands meeting. “We absolutely will end up on iOS,” said Spencer during the meeting, noting that he “feels good” about the company’s iOS progress. “We’ll end up on iPhones, and iPads with Game Pass.” Business Insider first reported the news of the web version for iOS.
