Alienware m15 R3 Review: A Quieter, Powerful Gaming Laptop

Alienware m15 R3

Thin and light gaming laptops are no longer a novelty, as practically every PC maker offers their own take on the category. Some of them don’t always stand-out from the crowd, however, and can push the envelope on thermals in ever-tighter chassis designs. That is most definitely not the case with Dell’s Alienware m15 R3 though, unless you want to compare it to last year’s Alienware m15 R2. At a passing glance, this year’s refresh looks just like last year’s model. That is not a bad thing, as the new m15 R3 is a head-turning laptop with some notable improvements to this newest iteration, including a revamped cooling solution.

Quite frankly, we are just fine with the overall physical design staying the same for another round. Dell had already given the m15 a complete facelift last year, ditching the gray digs and outdated aesthetic of the original model and dressing

Cooling is tricky business for laptops in general, and especially thinner and lighter designs with this kind of horsepower under the hood. To keep temps in check, Dell employed its “Cryo-Tech” cooling technology, which consists in part of “creative thermal module designs” as the company puts it. The Alienware m15 R3 also uses a new CPU vapor chamber cooling system on configurations that feature a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or higher GPU.
For this latest iteration, Dell-Alienware made a few upgrades to the cooling scheme in general. There are 25 percent more fan blades over last year’s model, resulting in a 10 percent CFM (cubic feet per minute) jump in overall airflow. Dell also says it added 39 percent more weight in copper to the heat sink itself, to help dissipate more heat.

Gaming laptops are not necessarily expected to be quiet machines, given their comparatively intense workloads (3D graphics).

Microsoft Surface Go laptop announced

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go

Microsoft

Microsoft on Thursday announced a new affordable laptop, the Surface Laptop Go, which starts at $549. It’s a compelling option for people at home right now who need a new computer and don’t want to spend a lot of money.

This is Microsoft’s attempt to get new products out to consumers before the busy holiday shopping season — it also announced a tiny update to the Surface Pro X tablet from last year. Oddly, unlike in most recent years, Microsoft didn’t announce a whole bunch of new products.

There’s still no news on its regular Surface Pro tablet/laptop hybrid, for example, and it didn’t update its Surface Studio 2 desktop computer or provide an update on its delayed Surface Neo device.

But the Surface Go seems neat. It’s the smallest full-sized laptop Microsoft has launched, with a 12.4-inch display compared to the 13.5-inch screens it

Microsoft may announce a new Surface Laptop tomorrow

Earlier this month, we caught wind that Microsoft was preparing a new, smaller Surface Laptop for later this year, reportedly with a 12.5-inch display. And now, two typically reliable sources are suggesting Microsoft will announce it tomorrow, October 1st.

It’s called the Surface Laptop Go, according to WinFuture’s Roland Quandt, who spotted one listing with Windows 10 Pro that cost as little as €649 (roughly $750 USD), which sounds a good bit less expensive than the Surface Laptop 3’s starting price of $999. Quandt speculates that versions with Windows 10 Home might be priced even lower.

It wouldn’t be the first Surface event in early October

WalkingCat, often reliable with Microsoft rumors, tweeted in mid-September that the company might host on either September 30th or October 1st to announce Surface devices, and Quandt says that tomorrow
