Immune T cells swarm to tumours by following a chemical gradient left by other cancer-killing T cells — ScienceDaily

When immune system T cells find and recognise a target, they release chemicals to attract more T cells which then swarm to help subdue the threat, shows a new study published today in eLife.

The discovery of this swarming behaviour, and the chemical attractants that immune cells use to direct swarms towards tumours, could one day help scientists develop new cancer therapies that boost the immune system. This is particularly important for solid tumours, which so far have been less responsive to current immunotherapies than cancers affecting blood cells.

“Scientists have previously thought that cancer-killing T cells identified tumours by randomly searching for them or by following the chemical trails laid by other intermediary immune cells,” says lead author Jorge Luis Galeano Niño, a PhD graduate at UNSW Sydney. “We wanted to investigate this further to see if it’s true, or whether T cells locate tumours via another mechanism.”

After more US sanctions have all-but-crippled the future of Huawei’s global networks business — and its efforts to become the dominant 5G provider — dollar signs are already materializing for its rivals.

At the crux of Huawei’s withdrawal is an annual $27 billion opportunity for its competitors — including Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung — to become the go-to providers of 5G and other telecommunication services to domestic carriers, says Ryan Koontz, an analyst at Rosenblatt Securities. “It’s a massive economic transition,” says Koontz. “It’s relatively urgent for these carriers to make the change.” 

The multi-billion dollar market opportunity, which hinges on Huawei’s sales figures for the year ended September, will not evaporate overnight, Koontz says, but will likely be absorbed over the next three to four years.

BrainChip Holdings 1,500% Rise Left CEO Louis DiNardo Dumbfounded

A meteoric rally in an Australian penny stock is fast unraveling after confounding not just market watchers but also the company’s CEO.

BrainChip Holdings Ltd., an artificial intelligence-focused startup whose flagship product is yet to be made widely available for commercial use, saw its 2020 gains propel to 1,500% earlier this month. While concerns about overheating have seen the stock getting hammered since, its 762% advance year-to-date still makes for one of the best performances among technology names in Asia Pacific, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

After 40 Years, Updated Pain Definition Aims To Include Those Once Left Out

It’s not uncommon for people with chronic pain but no clear injury to deal with doubting physicians.

Katie Clark, a retired middle school English Language Arts teacher in Michigan with fibromyalgia, said she has been lucky with her doctors. Fibromyalgia causes chronic pain that doctors think arises from amplified pain signals in the brain and spinal cord.

“I’ve been fortunate to have doctors that mostly believe the pain I feel is real,” she said. But even then, “They don’t fully understand that it affects you emotionally, physically, your energy level, your ability to think straight. That is difficult to communicate to doctors.”
