Mars will appear especially bright Tuesday night, at opposition with the sun

Opposition describes the occasion marked by the sun, Earth and Mars all lining up perfectly. Earth is in the middle, so the sun is on one side while Mars is on the other. That means Mars will be at the opposite point in the sky, above the horizon after the sun has set.

It also means Mars will appear fully illuminated from the vantage point of Earth-dwellers, causing it to appear especially bright.

Where to look

Mars was closest to Earth a week ago on Oct. 6, in fact the closest in 15 years, but appears more brilliant Tuesday night. That’s because it’s in a better position to reflect more sunlight back at us. Last week, it was doing so at a slanted angle, acutely diminishing its apparent magnitude.

Louisville police release body camera videos showing night Breonna Taylor was killed: “My girlfriend’s dead”

Louisville police have released a batch of evidence from an investigation of the raid that killed Breonna Taylor in March. It raises new questions over why police targeted her home in an effort to prosecute her ex-boyfriend.

A police lieutenant who came to the scene after the shooting told investigators, “something really bad happened.”

The material includes more than 250 videos and more than 4,000 pages of documents. It was released Wednesday as the outcry for justice for Taylor continues. 

Former Detective Brett Hankison pleaded not guilty to three counts of wanton endangerment for endangering the lives of three people in the neighboring apartment, the only charges that were filed by the grand jury reviewing Taylor’s death. Neither Hankison nor the two other officers involved in the fatal police shooting were charged directly with Taylor’s death.

Mars has been growing brighter in the night sky throughout the year so far. On Tuesday night, the planet will be at the brightest we’ve seen it in October in 32 years.

According to NASA, on October 6, 2020, Mars will be 62.1 million kilometres away from Earth. That’s the closest it’s come to us since July and August of 2018, when it reached a distance of 57.6 million km on July 31.

A recently designed space toilet that better accommodates women is headed to the International Space Station. The new loo was packed inside a cargo ship set to blast off late Thursday from NASA’s flight facility on Wallops Island, Virginia, though technical difficulties delayed the launch until Friday evening. The astronauts will give the toilet a test run for the next few months.
