The Capital Letter: Week of October 5

Call me crazy, but I’m not convinced that the latest round of talks on a new stimulus package are going as well as they might be.

President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi questioned each other’s mental faculties, showcasing increasing partisan tensions as Election Day looms.

“The president is, shall we say, in an altered state right now, so I don’t know how to answer for his behavior.,” Pelosi said in an interview on Bloomberg Television Thursday.

The Democratic leader also called Trump’s changing positions this week on whether to let his administration conduct talks on fiscal stimulus “strange.” Trump pulled his team from negotiations Tuesday, prompting Pelosi to suggest to colleagues that day that Trump’s thinking might have been affected by the steroids he’s taken to battle his Covid-19, Bloomberg has reported.

“The disassociation from reality would be funny if it

YouTube and influencer business trends newsletter October 8

Hi, this is Amanda Perelli. Welcome back to Insider Influencers, our weekly rundown on the influencer and creator economy. Sign up for the newsletter here.

TikTok rival Triller has reported ever-increasing user numbers in the last year, but some former employees are wary of its figures.

My colleague Dan Whateley spoke with six former Triller employees who pointed in particular to an October 2019 press release by the company, which they said gave a monthly active user count that was far above what they were seeing on some internal metrics at the time.

In the October 2019 release, Triller said it had grown 500% organically year over year to 13 million monthly active users. But a screenshot provided by a former employee from one of Triller’s app-analytics tools, Localytics, showed just 2 million monthly active iOS users and about 484,000 monthly active users on Android devices. It was taken a

PlayStation Plus Free Games (October 2020)

In October 2020, PlayStation Plus members get another pair of free games with their subscription. Subscribers can claim Vampyr and Need for Speed Payback. These games are yours to keep as long as you’re a part of the PlayStation Plus program.

Developed by Dontnod Entertainment–the studio behind the Life is Strange series–Vampyr is an action-RPG that flew under the radar when it released in 2018. You play as Dr. Jonathan Reid, a man who took a hippocratic oath to help the citizens of London but now finds himself a newly turned vampire. This understandably creates a moral dilemma, and there’s also a widespread influenza outbreak that is threatening the population. Your choices in Vampyr truly matter, altering both the gameplay and the story. It earned a 7/10 in GameSpot’s Vampyr review.

Racing fans can pick up Need for Speed Payback, the 2017 entry in the long-running series developed

Apple ‘Hi Speed’ iPhone Event Is October 13. Here’s What To Expect

Everything is different in 2020. Instead of one big uber-event in which Apple announces everything from Apple Watches to iPhones to new software, Apple decided to split it up this year.

And now Apple has announced the iPhone Apple event date: October 13.

The title for the event is “Hi Speed,” which probably can only mean one thing: 5G. Faster speed for iPhones, where networks will support it. There will be surprises at the event, even if small ones, but here’s what to expect besides the 5G support.

iPhone 12, of course

Apple will finally unveil the iPhone 12, which will likely come in a mini 5.4” size as well as full-size. Pockets of the world will rejoice as will those who just want a more portable device, and are not fans of the current trend to bigger

Apple schedules iPhone 12 media event for October 13

Following the September “Time Flies” media event for new Apple Watch and iPad models, Apple today announced an October event called “Hi, Speed” that will focus primarily on new iPhones — the most popular products and biggest revenue generators from the world’s largest tech company. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on October 13, and once again will use a virtual format with footage streamed from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California to viewers online.

The stakes are atypically high for Apple this year, as the latest iPhones will be Apple’s first to embrace 5G cellular technology, nearly two years after rivals such as Samsung showed and started to release the earliest 5G devices. During that time, 5G networks have successfully launched all across the world, generally with superior performance outside the uneven United States. Some 5G towers are already delivering transformative-class peak download speeds in the
