Fundamental constants place a new speed limit on sound

Sound has a speed limit. Under normal circumstances, its waves can travel no faster than about 36 kilometers per second, physicists propose October 9 in Science Advances.

Sound zips along at different rates in different materials — moving faster in water than in air for example. But under conditions found naturally on Earth, no material can host sound waves that outpace this ultimate limit, which is about 100 times the typical seed of sound traveling in air.

The team’s reasoning rests on well-known equations of physics and mathematical relationships.  “Given the simplicity of the argument, it suggests that [the researchers] are putting their finger on something very deep,” says condensed matter physicist Kamran Behnia of École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles in Paris.

The equation for the speed limit rests on fundamental constants, special numbers that rule the cosmos. One such number, the speed of light, sets

A Futuristic Hotel In Canada Was Named The World’s Most Amazing Remote Place To Stay

Do you really want to get away from it all? One of the world’s most remote hotels is in Canada and it looks like it’s from a science fiction movie.

The striking stay called Fogo Island Inn sits pretty on the East Coast and came in first place among the world’s top 10 most incredible remote hotels, according to Mirror.

Fogo, which describes itself as “an island off an island” is known for many things from its wondrous architecture to its shores where whale spotting is a thing.

In addition, the 29-room hotel is situated right in Iceberg Alley meaning you can quite possibly spot huge icebergs at sea.

But many experts surveyed also believe vaccine development will take place at an accelerated rate — ScienceDaily

Experts working in the field of vaccine development tend to believe that an effective vaccine is not likely to be available for the general public before the fall of 2021. In a paper published this week in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, a McGill-led team published the results of a recent survey of 28 experts working in vaccinology.

The survey was carried out in late June 2020. The majority of those surveyed were mostly Canadian or American academics with an average of 25 years of experience working in the field.

“Experts in our survey offered forecasts on vaccine development that were generally less optimistic than the timeline of early 2021 offered by US public officials. In general they seem to believe that a publicly available vaccine next summer is the best-case scenario with the possibility that it may take until 2022,” said Jonathan Kimmelman, a James McGill professor

In preparation for the sale, Amazon has already blacked out vacation for its full-time warehouse workers from Oct. 13-20, according to another internal message to employees that CNET reviewed. The news fits with earlier statements from Amazon that confirmed the closely followed online event would take place in the fourth quarter.

An Amazon spokesperson on Tuesday declined to comment on the starting date. “Stay
