High radiation on moon means lunar bases should be buried for safety

  • NASA recently unveiled the plan for its Artemis program, a series of missions that would return astronauts to the moon.
  • A new study reveals how much radiation astronauts are exposed to on the lunar surface: a daily dose about 200 times greater than on Earth.
  • NASA wants to build a base on the moon, but the new data suggests it’d be safest to bury such a base under 2.5 feet of moon dirt to protect astronauts from radiation.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

NASA wants to build a permanent base on the moon by the 2030s — a place astronauts could stay for extended visits at the lunar south pole.

But according to a new study, any astronauts who go there would face levels of radiation nearly three times higher than what the astronauts on the space station deal with. In high enough doses, long-term exposure to this

REI President Discusses Evolution of Technology, Safety Programs

A consistent theme of the virtual Bus Technology Summit is the lightning-fast progression of technology and where it is headed. Student transporters can easily get caught up in daily operations, especially in a year like this one, and forget to how far society and the industry has come in terms of advancements.

Scott Hays, president of technology provider REI, reminded attendees of this during his Tech Talk on Wednesday, day three of the online event. He explained that in the 1970s and 1980s, safety lighting consisting of amber warning lamps and flashing red lights on school bus stop-arms was evolving. In 1986, New York state became the first to require seatbelts on school buses. That same year, school bus drivers nationwide were required to obtain commercial driver licenses. All of these events have contributed to increased overall safety.

When the 2000s hit, more technology was introduced, from seamless window shields

Identified materials could improve safety and performance — ScienceDaily

Stanford University scientists have identified a new class of solid materials that could replace flammable liquid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries.

The low-cost materials — made of lithium, boron and sulfur — could improve the safety and performance of electric cars, laptops and other battery-powered devices, according to the scientists. Their findings are published in a study in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

“A typical lithium-ion battery has two solid electrodes with a highly flammable liquid electrolyte in between,” said study lead author Austin Sendek, a visiting scholar in Stanford’s Department of Materials Science & Engineering. “Our goal is to design stable, low-cost solid electrolytes that also increase the power and energy output of the battery.”

Promising materials

Battery electrolytes shuttle lithium ions between the positive and negative electrode during charging and discharging. Most lithium-ion batteries use a liquid electrolyte that can combust if the battery is punctured
