3,000-Year-Old Leather Sports Balls Discovered In China, The Oldest In Eurasia

KEY POINTS

  • Researchers found what might be the oldest known balls in Eurasia
  • It’s not clear how the game was played but it was likely part of exercise and military training
  • The ball game possibly arose around the same time as horseback riding

Researchers found what may just be the oldest ancient balls in Eurasia. The find provides evidence that ball games were already around in Europe and Asia earlier than previously thought.

In a new study, a team of German and Chinese researchers report the discovery of three ancient balls that were recovered from the graves in the prehistoric Yanghai cemetery in northeast China. They are made of leather and measure somewhere between 7.4 and 9.2 centimeters.

Radiocarbon dating of the balls reveals that they are likely from 2,900 to 3,200 years ago, making them the oldest balls in the region.

“This makes these balls about five centuries older

Pawtucket learning center champions equity through arts, sports, and technology

Question: When was ASTRO founded and what is its mission?

My cousin Michael and I founded ASTRO in 2014. Our mission is to champion equity among diverse populations by innovating health-promoting programs that improve the way people live, learn, work, and play.

Q: On Oct. 5, the Social Enterprise Greenhouse announced that it was providing ASTRO with a $25,000 loan. What will you use the money for?

Funds acquired through this loan will provide working capital for ASTRO to expand our operations and offer day care services to adult populations. We originally started out in adult services, but the community need that took precedence was providing a safe place for kids to be during the out-of-school time, and this is where we have focused the majority of our efforts over the years.

Now that many adults have been displaced from their day programs due to COVID-19 restrictions on numbers, there

Four takeaways: Virginia Tech’s loss at North Carolina | College Sports

New coordinator Justin Hamilton, who finally got to call a game in his new job Saturday, will need to figure out some answers before Tech’s next game, against an offensively-rejuvenated Boston College team.

2) The offense is better with Hooker: Last year’s starting quarterback, Hendon Hooker finally got on the field in 2020 and he showed what he brings to the offense. Going into the game, Braxton Burmeister, Tech’s starter in the first two wins, had a completion percentage under 45% and the Hokies were just 10 for 33 on third-down.

Last season, Hooker completed over 60% of his throws and Saturday, after Hooker took over, Tech went 2 for 4 on third downs in the second half.

Hooker finished 7 for 13 for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

3) Herbert is the Hokies identity: For reasons that are hard to explain, Virginia Tech’s play calling largely ignored the ACC’s

The latest on UGA football and basketball games with Georgia Tech and other schedule updates – Sports – Savannah Morning News

ATHENS — Georgia’s football game with Georgia Tech in 2021 will remain as scheduled to be held in Atlanta even with the teams not playing in Athens this year, Bulldogs athletic director Greg McGarity said.

The in-state rivals will not go up against each other this season for the first time since 1924 after the SEC decided to play a conference-only schedule due to the pandemic. The ACC allowed for one nonconference game played in the school’s home state.

“I think if the shoe were on the other foot, it’s not that you push the game back a year, but it would take both schools to agree to do that and obviously Tech has no interest in doing that,” McGarity said. “We’ll just basically be in Atlanta in 2021. It’s unfortunate but it’s just where things stand.”

The Georgia men’s basketball game at Georgia Tech for this season may not

Girls benefit from doing sports — ScienceDaily

Girls — but not boys — who participate actively in school sports activities in middle childhood show improved behaviour and attentiveness in early adolescence, suggests a new Canadian study published in Preventative Medicine.

“Girls who do regular extracurricular sports between ages 6 and 10 show fewer symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at age 12, compared to girls who seldom do,” said Linda Pagani, a professor at Université de Montréal’s School of Psychoeducation.

“Surprisingly, however, boys do not appear to gain any behavioural benefit from sustained involvement in sports during middle childhood,” said Pagani, who led the study co-authored by her students Marie-Josée Harbec and Geneviève Fortin and McGill University associate medical professor Tracie Barnett.

As the team prepared their research, “it was unclear to what extent organized physical activity is beneficial for children with ADHD symptoms,” recalled Pagani.

“Past studies have varied widely in quality, thus blurring the true
