Mentorship During a Pandemic: Transitions from Lab and Sea to Virtual

The summer of 2020 was supposed to be one of exploration, discovery, and mentorship for students in the geosciences.

But then the pandemic happened.

Laboratories shuttered their doors; research vessels stayed docked.

Many of the mentorship programs students applied to are now navigating the still-uncharted waters of the “new normal” and working to provide quality, albeit remote, mentorship.

STEMSEAS—short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Student Experiences Aboard Ships—is one such program.

Run out of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, the National Science Foundation–funded initiative has been a gateway for more than 125 students to experience ocean science up close every summer since 2016. In a normal year, STEMSEAS gives undergraduates the opportunity to spend 6–10 days aboard a U.S. Academic Research Fleet research vessel with experienced faculty mentors as the ship makes transits between expeditions.

“Going to sea is really quite life changing the first time one

ItelliFest 2020 – a good example of the virtual tech event experience

(screenshot)

Last week, itelligence UK ran three days of virtual sessions in its effort to turn the annual in-person event into something useful for customers and potential customers. Dubbed itelliFest, it worked out pretty well although, for me, the experience was exhausting.

Unlike my colleague Jon Reed, I’ve tended to eschew virtual events following the catastrophic cluster that was SAPPHIRENow 2020. At best, my attention span runs 90 minutes these days, hardly conducive to a vendor demanding my attention over a full day. But then ever it was so.

Even with in-person events, I stopped physically attending keynotes years ago as more firms live streamed. Why bother getting crushed or worse still shepherded to specific ‘reserved’ seating when I could get an aerial view from the flying cameras coupled to on the ground backchannel Tweet commentary while still enjoying a cuppa in my hotel room jammies? Attending a near non-stop

‘Universal law of touch’ will enable new advances in virtual reality — ScienceDaily

Seismic waves, commonly associated with earthquakes, have been used by scientists to develop a universal scaling law for the sense of touch. A team, led by researchers at the University of Birmingham, used Rayleigh waves to create the first scaling law for touch sensitivity. The results are published in Science Advances.

The researchers are part of a European consortium (H-Reality) that are already using the theory to develop new Virtual Reality technologies that incorporate the sense of touch.

Rayleigh waves are created by impact between objects and are commonly thought to travel only along surfaces. The team discovered that, when it comes to touch, the waves also travel through layers of skin and bone and are picked up by the body’s touch receptor cells.

Using mathematical modelling of these touch receptors the researchers showed how the receptors were located at depths that allowed them to respond to Rayleigh waves.
