On Monday, YouTube announced a number of updates for its YouTube Music TV app, including TVs running Android TV OS and the new Chromecast with Google TV. For all smart TVs, YouTube Music users can now access saved playlists and liked songs in their available libraries, the company said in a blog post. The options will appear in the YouTube Music tab within the YouTube TV app. The update also includes new visuals to show albums and and playlist artwork.
“We’re working hard to bring even more features to YouTube Music,” the blog post reads. “In the coming months, YouTube Music Premium users will be able to continue playing music in the background after exiting the app.”

TikTok rival Triller has reported ever-increasing user numbers in the last year, but some former employees are wary of its figures.
My colleague Dan Whateley spoke with six former Triller employees who pointed in particular to an October 2019 press release by the company, which they said gave a monthly active user count that was far above what they were seeing on some internal metrics at the time.
In the October 2019 release, Triller said it had grown 500% organically year over year to 13 million monthly active users. There are currently over 50 million creators on Youtube, Instagram, Twitch, TikTok, and other social media platforms. Two million of them are full-time, and they earn six figure salaries by creating content daily or weekly. And that massive distributed content creation engine means that about 90% of the video, audio, photo, and text-based content consumed today by Gen Z is created by individuals, not corporations.
That’s a massive cultural shift.
These are just a few of the insights from a recent report on the “creator economy” by Yuanling Yuan, senior associate at SignalFire, and investment firm.

YouTube’s website now supports iOS 14’s picture-in-picture mode once again, after the functionality mysteriously disappeared last month. It can be enabled in both Safari as well as third-party browsers like Chrome or Firefox by expanding a video to play fullscreen, and then tapping the small picture-in-picture icon on the top-left of the interface. Then you’re free to minimize the browser and use other apps while the continuing to watch a video. You can also slide the PiP window to the side if you just want to hear music without the video obstructing the display.
OS-level picture-in-picture support was added as a new feature in iOS 14, but shortly afterwards stopped working on YouTube’s website for iPhone users. It continued to work for users who subscribe to YouTube Premium, perhaps unsurprisingly. It also works for iPad users.

YouTube on Thursday restored compatibility with Apple’s iOS 14 picture-in-picture feature, allowing all users to view minimized content from a mobile browser.
Earlier this month, the Google streaming video unit restricted PiP functionality to YouTube Premium subscribers.
The YouTube app does not yet support the feature on iOS, but the service’s website proved a useful workaround until roughly two weeks ago. With PiP still functional for Premium users and on YouTube content embedded in third-party webpages, it was thought that the company had actively updated code on its mobile site to block free access to the iOS 14 feature. Such a move would be warranted as PiP essentially enables background audio, a popular Premium-only feature.
As noted by MacRumors, however, it appears that compatibility has returned.
